Two clear bowls of yogurt topped with caramelized banana slices. A spoon with cinnamon is between the bowls, on a white countertop.

Ingredients

  • 1 container (pot) plain yogurt
  • 1/2 container (pot) sugar
  • 1/2 container (pot) vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 containers (pots) all-purpose flour
  • 3 pears (including a few slices for decoration)
  • 100 g dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. 1Grease a cake pan or line it with parchment paper. Use the empty yogurt container to measure the sugar, oil, and flour.
  2. 2In a large bowl, whisk together the yogurt and sugar.
  3. 3Add the eggs and mix well until the texture is smooth and combined.
  4. 4Add the flour, baking powder, and salt, then pour in the oil while continuing to mix well.
  5. 5Dice the pears and add them to the batter along with the chocolate chips. Fold gently to distribute the ingredients without crushing the pears.
  6. 6Pour the batter into the prepared pan. For a decorative touch, arrange a few pear slices on top.
  7. 7Bake for approximately 45 to 50 minutes, until the cake is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. (Baking times may vary depending on your oven.)
  8. 8Once baked, let the cake cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before removing it. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Tips

  • Use Conference or Williams (Bartlett) pears as they hold their shape well during baking.
  • Avoid overripe pears which can make the cake too soggy.
  • Dark chocolate pairs better with pears than milk chocolate, which can be too sweet.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or some almond flour for a variation in flavor.

Substitutions

  • plain yogurt → plant-based yogurt (soy, coconut) — For a dairy-free version.
  • plain yogurt → sour cream or crème fraîche — For a richer cake.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace the yogurt?

Yes, you can replace the plain yogurt with plant-based yogurt (soy, coconut, etc.) for a dairy-free version, or even with sour cream for a richer cake. However, the purpose of a yogurt cake is to use the yogurt so you can use the container as a measuring cup!

How many chocolate chips should I use?

100g is the ideal amount for a balanced, indulgent taste. If you prefer a more subtle touch, start with 70 to 80g and adjust to your liking.

How should I store this cake?

Store it in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 to 3 days. You can also keep it in the refrigerator, but remember to take it out a few minutes before serving to let it regain its softness.
